Should Your Small Business Be on Google+?

Google+, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, has gained a reputation as a desolate wasteland of a social network. Google has fought back, claiming an ever-growing userbase (75 million daily active users today) but the calculation methods are sketchy at best.

Given the platform's lack of popularity, should you bother maintaining a Google+ presence for your small business? Absolutely.

Why? There are two reasons, says Jacob Smith, digital marketing specialist for Zumba Fitness.

Show Up in Search

First, Google+ integrates with all of Google's other extremely popular public-facing services: search, Google Places, Google Maps and so on. Any business on Google+ will likely see an SEO (search engine optimization) boost from maintaining an active Google+ page. If you're running a brick-and-mortar store, such as a restaurant or appliance shop, having a Google+ page will help add valuable data to your Google Places page.

"For small businesses, Google+ isn't another one of those minor social media platforms that pops up and can be ignored," says Smith. "[Google is] tying it to SEO and other purposes. There are some realms where you need to be there to have a brand. If you take my name and Google it, my Google+ profile comes up as a good result. John's Locksmiths will show up quicker on organic search if John has a Google+ page."

Communication Tools

SEO and brand management aside, Google+ can be a powerful tool for a small business to use internally. When you combine the social network element of Google+ with services such as Google Docs, what's left is an extremely capable communications tool for already-established networks.

"Google+ has a lot of integration with other Google products," says Smith, naming Gmail and Google Docs as examples. "We use Google's full suite of apps internally. While we're writing on Gmail, we can hop on to Google+ and communicate ideas with coworkers in real-time. If you're using Facebook [or Skype] like that, you're jumping through platforms to do the same task."

Additionally, Hangouts can be a user-friendly way to host video conferences for brainstorming sessions or troubleshooting.

"Small businesses can do a lot with Hangouts," adds Smith, pointing to how easy it is for non-tech savvy people to engage in a Hangout and share documents and presentations with one another. "In the newest setup for Google+, you can pull people in from Gmail, swap screens and share documents."

Google+ gives your small business two advantages over the competition: better search rankings and an impressive array of internal communications features. So why wouldn't you use this free tool?

How is your small business using Google+?

Utah Restaurant Mobile Website - Restaurant Internet Marketing

Utah Restaurant Mobile Website - Restaurant Internet Marketing

You don’t have to look very far to see that nearly everyone is using some sort of wireless device and these devices are being used by a growing number of users to access the internet.

Failing to recognize this could mean you’re losing out on a large portion of your potential market share.

We’ve all heard the phrase: “Leaving money on the table”… It means neglecting opportunities to make as much profit as possible with products and/or services you already sell. But how does this apply to mobile websites?

Well for starters, if you don’t have a mobile version of your business website, your mobile visitor is forced to view the desktop version of your website on the small screen of their mobile device. This tends to lead to frustration and the visitor quickly leaves without finding what they were looking for.

Mobile websites are designed and coded so they can fit within the exact screen size used on mobile phones.

Business mobile websites allow businesses to advertise their products and services directly to mobile phone users who use their mobile phone to search for products and services at the instant they are needed.

1) Another online medium to market your business brand

2) Create the perception of a reputable and trusted business and show you are above your competitors

3) Increases business “find ability” and market reach to customers on the move

4) Increases your business search engine listings and rankings this is a plus in Google search

5) Grow your customer database by using mobile site coupon codes and QR codes

6) Directly market to your prospects and customers personal mobile phone with instant offers

11) Give customers a “direct dial” link into your business for support from their mobile phone

4 Reasons Why You Should Have A Mobile Version Of Your Business Website

To begin, if you don’t have a mobile version of your business website, your mobile visitor is forced to view the desktop version of your website on the small screen of their mobile device.  This tends to lead to frustration and the visitor quickly leaves without finding what they were looking for.

Before we purchase anything these days, we like to know a little more about what we are thinking about buying. Generally we will search online to read any reviews or complaints that have been posted about the product or services in question.  However, we know for any business to succeed it must ensure that it can provide information that its potential customers will want.  Certainly in the last few years the importance of mobile websites for local businesses has grown quite substantially.

So, what are the reasons why you should have a mobile version of your business website and have it mobile friendly?  Below, I take a look at some of these.

1)  Year by year the number of people who are choosing to use the internet for information is growing by leaps and bounds.  During the last ten years, there has been a huge rise in internet usage.  As a matter of fact, in the USA alone, it grew an amazing 150% between 2000 and 2010.

2)  Around 60% of all people who own a mobile phone today will go online and around half of these will actually be spending time online at least once each day.

3)  The creating of a mobile website for your business is relatively inexpensive.  Although, how they are designed is different from the way in which a traditional website will be designed because of the screen size and resolutions that need to be worked with.  Plus, you will find that creating such a site doesn’t take up as much time.

4)  Mobile websites allow businesses to advertise their products and services directly to mobile phone users who use their mobile phone to search for products and services at the instant they are needed.

5 Reasons Your Website Sucks

5 Reasons Your Website Sucks

Step into your consumer mindset for a moment. You’re online and you visit XYZ’s company website. Why? You need information. You want to buy something. Or maybe you’ve never heard of them and want to figure out what they do. Who knows.

When you get to their website, it’s not working right for various reasons. It’s slow. It has broken links. It’s just not a good user experience. Now, what is your perception of XYZ after visiting their site? [I'll pause here to give you a moment to think about this.]

And the correct answer is: You think their company sucks.

I recently stumbled across a bit of research by 1&1 Internet, the big hosting provider, that shows that most people just won’t forgive a faulty website. The report also says that 68 percent of Americans are more critical towards website errors today than they were five years ago.

Luckily, 1&1 asked what irks people the most. Here are the five biggest reason why your website may suck:

  1.     It runs slow.

  2.     Some pages load fast, some load slow

  3.     Broken pages and links

  4.     The URL isn’t working.

  5.     Online orders aren’t processed

Something that we know about mobile users is that they’re even more impatient than desktop users. This makes sense, right? Smartphone users are on-the-go. If you’re on your phone searching for information, you probably need it immediately.

Bottom line: Your website, mobile or not, better work or you risk losing customers.
