Yelp Help and "The Never-ending Story" of Local SEO Strategies A SPN Exclusive Article By Samantha Walt (c) 2012

Yelp Help and "The Never-ending Story" of Local SEO Strategies
A SPN Exclusive Article By Samantha Walt (c) 2012

After assistant professor Michael Luca demonstrated in his Harvard Business School Working Paper the effect Yelp reviews have on restaurant goers, many small business owners nationwide are now trying to employ their own 'Yelp Strategies.' Although Luca states the success a restaurant can have with good reviews, other small businesses do not have the same volume of reviews and thus it's difficult to agree or disagree with his conclusion. Regardless of Luca's concluding remarks, it is undeniable the impact a local SEO strategy can have for a company. With or without reviews, having a comprehensive local strategy can take you from zero to sixty in a day's work. Below, I discuss the ins and outs of dealing with Yelp and other major sites plus a look at the evolution of local listings and mobile apps.

Say what? Yelp?

Even though Yelp has made recent news, many people still have no idea what it is or, why it matters. For a quick background: Yelp, founded in 2004, is a local search engine where anyone can write a review about local services, goods, and businesses. With an average of 66 million new visitors, and 25 million local reviews written, Yelp is a premier review site. Yelp offers local business a free listing on their site with a no-follow link to a website of their choosing.

Great I filled everything out, but what about reviews?

The hardest part about doing a complete local SEO strategy is getting those reviews. On Google, the more reviews you have the higher your ranking is in Google Places. On Yelp positive reviews and higher 'star levels' result in more revenue for your business (Luca, 2012). Then again, negative reviews can result in a loss of revenue. One bad review online can affect your business for years to come but a lot of good reviews can usually outweigh the bad.

Actually getting the reviews is a whole other problem. To get a customer to review your company often means that you have to get them to think about your company outside of doing business with you. Some useful strategies to get them to care about your bottom line and stop thinking about themselves is to deliver exceptional service and remind them frequently of your existence with Facebook updates, emails, coupons, and candy canes. You can also use your local listings pages to encourage reviewing by providing links to your company site that promise positive reviewers future discounts.

Whoa! Submissions and reviews are done, but am I?

Since you are on this site chances are you have realized that SEO isn't ever done. Every day, new information is popping up about how to better optimize your site, blog, and even local listings. Having read and heard nearly everything I can find on local listings, especially Google Places, I would say I know a lot, but it doesn't ever stop. My best local listing advice is, make sure that your business is available on every site, especially ones with mobile capabilities. If you have a store front of any sort, make sure the people walking and driving in your area can find you via mobile or GPS devices. Do research on the most popular applications (apps) and make sure that your business comes up when searched. If you haven't tried it out don't worry, I have.

While writing this article I wanted to prove to myself the importance of mobile devices on local listings. Knowing Foursquare is huge I decided to test them out. I came across not only Foursquare's app, which has some 15 million purchases, but that of 10 other related apps. Most for free, each app claims to help you find 'cool' things and places based on your location. Oh and by the way, Yelp has a free application also. Apps for local business are replacing major search engines. Make sure you can be found on such apps and do not forget to make sure that your website is also mobile capable. The world is going mobile people, don't be the last to know.

Bottom Line (as I give my clients):

Have a local SEO strategy that has consistent information on each local listing site. Don't forget Luca's research and grow your testimonials online - it will help. Finally, go mobile via apps and your website. If you ever doubt the mobile revolution, just talk to my buddy Jed Alpert of Mobile Commons, a leader in the mobile evolution world, and he will tell you. Like I said above, there is always new information sprouting up about local SEO strategies, make sure you know what they are; it's fun!

What You Should Strategically Do About Google+ By Nancy McCord (c) 2012

What You Should

Strategically Do About Google+

By Nancy McCord (c) 2012

Even with the Wall Street Journal and other news services stating that Google+ is a ghost town and that users typically spend less than two minutes on the platform a month, I consider positioning yourself on Google+ a top priority. In fact so much so, that I wanted to make sure that all of our readers and clients knew my feelings about how to use Google+ and its importance for organic placement for the future.

First, let's talk about the actions you should take immediately.

- Tie your preferred Google account with Google+.
- Lock down your business name as a Google+ Business page.

- Lock down a business page with your most important short keyword phrase.

- Link your Google AdWords program to your Google+ account user name.

- Implement Google +1 on your blog and your website.

These important first steps can easily be done by you. If you need help, please ask us for it as what will be happening with Google+ in the near future is very important to your online visibility.

Second, let's talk about what Google+ and +1's are.

Google+ is a social platform. It is not like Facebook, but more like Facebook and Twitter combined. However, it is much more important than any of the social networks we know and use now.

You could consider Google+ like a voting and popularity network but one that has the ear of Google. Anything you do on Google+ will most certainly impact your website's organic placement and Web Visibility in the future. Google has said as much in their releases. Google has already started showing social results from your Google+ network in their personalized search results.

What this means is that for people and businesses that embrace Google+ early and start building their network now, there will be strong benefits for their updates and links; activity will be shown in your personal and expanded network's search/ social results.

+1's are Google's versions of votes. If you like a page, like an ad, like a blog post, like a Google+ comment, you vote it up using a +1. What is crucial to understand is that a +1 is tied to your Google+ activity. These +1 votes will impact your visibility and placement on Google in the new Google Search Plus Your World results.

Third, let's talk about Google Search Plus Your World.

In mid-January, Google rolled out an important change to their search index. They named it Google Search Plus Your World. In my industry we call it Search Plus. Google stated that they will be using activity, updates, Google+ activity, and +1 activity in the search results that they deliver to you personally and to those in your Google+ network.

What is interesting is that even if you are logged out of your Google account, Google is still tracking your activity. Of additional importance, is the announcement that the social related results that will be shown in the Google.com index are personally selected for you and WILL contain Google+ activity across your Google+ social network.

That means if you start building your network now, your information and website could be appearing in search results for a very broad network of readers and potential prospects. As this activity comes from your personal network, just like a word-of-mouth referral, links to you and your profile will most likely carry more authority and legitimacy in the eyes of potential clients. Everybody weighs a reference by a fríend about a business more than a written review found randomly on the Web. This will be the real impact of Google+ and +1's in the very near future.

Fourth, why should you take the actions mentioned on this page now?

Based on this new focus for Google, you need to start flowing through search and social activity into your Google+ and +1 bank. If you don't have accounts, Google can't tie the activity to you specifically.

If you wait to tie up your business page and top keyword phrase, you may find that someone else has tagged it; locking you out of words and phrasing that will be very important to your Google presence in the very near future. Even if you do nothing yet with these new accounts, they will be tied to you so that when you do want to use them you can.

Fifth, why is this so important?

All of the actions to take and the information in this article are important because the business that is driving this action is Google. As Google owns 65% of the online search market, to be positioned well on Google means taking full advantage of what Google considers important. It is very important to understand that Google+ is not Facebook. Google considers Google+ and +1's integral to the new face of search and how search results are shaped and delivered. Do not be fooled into thinking that this is just a social network. These new Google offerings are very important and should be embraced quickly and completely for your future organic placement benefit.

Don't wait beyond 30 days to take the actions we recommend. When Twitter first came out many clients did not move into the platform because they considered it just a time drain. For the clients we work with that embraced Twitter early, many have networks of followers well over 2,500 active users; allowing for some serious marketing action and site promotion. Our é is that Google+ is by far the most important new social network to have come out in the last three years. Don't miss your chance to stárt now so that you can take full advantage of the future possibilities.

Dental Implants Utah - Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental Implants Utah - Benefits of Dental Implants

Glenda Ryser, Implant Patient from Utah
"For many years I had, what I labeled, an incurable, unrealistic fear of the dentist. It wasn't a fear obtained through a horrible incident. For me, it was an imagined, "what if" fear. I didn't like having "NO CONTROL" over the dentist's actions. My mind said "What if his instrument slipped and it hit my nasal passage, or worse yet, my brain? What if I had a heart attack from my fear? Would he be able to save me? What if they didn't numb me enough? What if I felt pain?" I used to joke that I'd rather give birth on the floor in the middle of a huge, unknown crowd rather than go to the dentist. Next there were the noises and smells. I didn't want to hear the "whir" of an instrument. I couldn't stand the antiseptic smell. How would I truly know if the instruments were sterilized? My mind just went into a frenzied state. I just plain did NOT like going to the dentist.

So, over the years I had issues which ultimately led to a gap in my smile. I had a temporary "flipper" but wanted a "real" tooth in its place. I covered my mouth when I smiled, didn't like the feel of this foreign object in my mouth and wanted my smile back. I began researching dental implants and really loved the idea. I got up the nerve to, at least, go in for a complimentary exam. My heart was racing. The thought of even sitting in the chair gave me great anxiety. I chose Dr. Hamblin because he did offer sedation dentistry. I called Becky, his receptionist, who is wonderfully supportive and caring! His entire staff is very caring and supportive of each patient.

I expressed my fears and unrealistic concerns to Dr. Hamblin and he assured me that he would make me as comfortable as I needed to be to have the implant. He didn't underscore my fears. He and his staff guided me through each and every step of the implant. I chose the sedation more from fear and anxiety than anything else. On the day of the start of the procedure I was still panicky and scared. His assistant gave me another "pill" shortly before the procedure and the next thing I knew my sister-in-law was calling me to check in on me after she had brought me home. Becky called to check on me the same day. I had very minimal pain and had the necessary medication in case it was too awful.

Dr. Hamblin and his staff have helped me release most of my fears of the dentist and I am proud and happy to say I can go for a cleaning without any medication and a minimal amount of fear. "Thank you" seems like such simple words but they are deep from my heart to Dr. H and his staff! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" -Glenda Ryser, Implant Patient from Utah

Judy Boswell, Implant & Aesthetic Patient from Utah

"I’m so happy I found Dr. Hamblin and am thrilled with the results of my dental implants! I had a very difficult situation with my upper teeth and considerable bone loss, but with Dr. Hamblin’s expertise he was able to place the implants in such a way that I now have a beautiful upper bridge permanently attached to give me a perfect smile. Dr. Hamblin was wonderful throughout and his staff was professional, friendly and very caring. I highly recommend Hamblin Dental Implant & Aesthetic for the best possible implant experience! Thank you so much! " Judy Boswell, Implant & Aesthetic Patient from Utah

Pinterest for Business – What is Pinterest

Pinterest for Business – What is Pinterest?

As a business owner here are some things to think about Pinterest.

-Don’t invest too much energy in a marketing plan on the site

just yet. Wait and see…and maybe “play with it” a bit by

setting up an account and learning the basics.

-If you do jump in remember to stay SOCIAL and don’t be

pushy with your message or products. It’s “fun” by design.

-Like Facebook, it will likely be wise to have a presence there,

but don’t get overly sucked in by the hype and by all means

don’t WASTE TIME THERE!

-There is no “magic formula” for “tapping into Pinterest”, so

don’t waste your money on any high priced launches or products

regarding the site.

Pinterest is on its way to becoming the "it" social network of 2012.

Shel Holtz recently confirmed there are now more than 50 million blog posts referencing or featuring Pinterest. Wow!

But the growth isn't all hype. Pinterest is driving some serious traffic for major brands. Also, Pinterest now drives more traffic than Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace combined.

With all this hype, people may ask you, the social media person, questions. It will help to have some Pinterest statistics at the ready. Below are 18 stats to bookmark and share with your boss when she or he asks about Pinterest.
