Have you heard of Flipboard, but your are not quite sure what it is? Have you wondered how you can use Flipboard to promote your business? Well, keep reading! We are going to show you how to leverage the app named Apple’s iPad App of the Year in 2010 and has only gotten better since.

Flipboard has been described as many things: A social-network aggregation, magazine-format application software (Mashable), an app that aggregates news and other content and presents it in a personalized magazine-like format (NY Times), and even a really cool app that you can use to make your own magazines (me).

According to Flipboard, “it is your personal magazine, filled with the things you care about. Catch up on the news, discover amazing things from around the world, or stay connected to the people closest to you–all in one place”.
Flipboard does this by aggregating information from your social feeds, rss feeds, and other partner websites and then presents it to you on your mobile device. The content is delivered in a magazine format that you can literally “flip” with your finger. It has an uncanny ability to make even the most trivial status image look exciting.

Recently, Flipboard has given its users the ability to create their own magazines. Magazines are awesome because they not only allow you to curate content by topic, they also allow you to share that content in a beautiful magazine format.
Some of the great features of Flipboard Magazines:
  • Magazines can be public or private. Private magazines are a great way to curate content for future marketing efforts, competitor data, etc.
  • You can curate multiple magazines. Here are all of mine: https://flipboard.com/profile/qrkim
  • You can flip content from around the web with the Flipboard bookmarklet, Chrome extension. This means that you are not limited to curating content only form the Flipboard app.
  • You can use the share menu on your mobile device to flip content into your magazines, as long as you have the app installed.
  • You can flip magazines into other magazines. Here is one example: I followed some of the best social media magazines by topic, such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and then flipped them all into my own magazine called the Social Media Marketing Resource Book. Think of it like each magazine is a chapter in a book.
  • You can manage your magazines from the Flipboard app or from the Flipboard editor, a web-based editor.
  • The Flipboard Editor is your magazine dashboard. You can choose the cover image for your magazine, set/edit the magazine title and description, arrange the order of the items you have added and even remove content you no longer want.
  • You can easily share your magazines from the Editor, using Facebook, Twitter and email.
  • You can change the order of your magazine items. By default, Flipboard orders them in reverse-chronological order, but you can rearrange the order. This is really handy if you are using a magazine as a sort of online story book, for instance to chronicle the growth of your business or the progression of a special project.

Top brands understand that consistent
and frequent content production leads to increased
views on YouTube videos and channels. This claim
is further supported by analyzing the top performing
quartile of the Top 100 Global Brands against the
bottom quartile. In the chart to the right it is clear
that themost successful channels have 50% more videos
than the least successful channels

Successful Practices for YouTube Marketing Success

1. Be a well-oiled, consistent, video content machine
The most successful brands have 50% more videos per channel compared to the
least successful ones.
The best-performing brands publish high volumes of content on a regular schedule.
Top aggregate brands publish approximately 78 videos per month. Leading media
brands produce even more: close to 500 videos per month.

2. Take video optimization and YouTube channel architecture seriously
YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine, so discoverability is key.
YouTube SEO follows very different rules than traditional SEO.
Within traditional SEO—Google prioritizes web pages with YouTube video embeds.
The best performing 25% of Top 100 Global Brands took more care in optimizing
their videos and channels, maintaining twice the number of playlists and video tags
than the bottom 25%.

3. Don’t get caught in the overproduction trap; lesser quality video works well, too
The best YouTube marketers produce a broader range of video content.
Videos do not need to be prime-time quality because those with lower production value
can be just as effective. 


4. Apply an “Always On” strategy to video marketing
The most successful brand marketers on YouTube integrate their online video
strategies with their traditional, offline marketing strategies.
Successful video marketers don’t hesitate to produce video series for very limited, but
highly engaged audiences, such as event participants.
17 of the Top 100 Global Brands use less than 50% of their channels.
Continued advertising results in sustainable channel growth and subscribers.


5. Apply branding consistently, intelligently and methodically
The top performers consistently brand their videos in both the video content itself as
well as in metadata, which includes titles, tags, and descriptions.
An appropriate level of branding within videos is essential because successful
YouTube videos are often used outside of the context of a branded YouTube channel,
such as website embedding.
Over-branding may limit sharing within independent communities of interest.


6. Adding more content is more important than adding more channels
37% of all channels have not been updated with fresh content for over 120 days.
Successful marketers have YouTube channels that clearly focus on specific target
audiences.



7. Engage your community with social media
Facebook and Twitter are among the most important sources of traffic on YouTube
within the Top 100 Global Brands.
Users frequently share videos on social networks, and video content is attractive for
sharing.

8.The top 25% of brands had significantly higher social sharing of video than the
bottom 25%.

Viewer sentiment is starting to show distinct trends by industry. Home and luxury
segments have the highest sentiment, while financial services and consumer goods
have the lowest.

After assistant professor Michael Luca demonstrated in his Harvard Business School Working Paper the effect Yelp reviews have on restaurant goers, many small business owners nationwide are now trying to employ their own 'Yelp Strategies.' Although Luca states the success a restaurant can have with good reviews, other small businesses do not have the same volume of reviews and thus it's difficult to agree or disagree with his conclusion. Regardless of Luca's concluding remarks, it is undeniable the impact a local SEO strategy can have for a company. With or without reviews, having a comprehensive local strategy can take you from zero to sixty in a day's work. Below, I discuss the ins and outs of dealing with Yelp and other major sites plus a look at the evolution of local listings and mobile apps.

Say what? Yelp?

Even though Yelp has made recent news, many people still have no idea what it is or, why it matters. For a quick background: Yelp, founded in 2004, is a local search engine where anyone can write a review about local services, goods, and businesses. With an average of 66 million new visitors, and 25 million local reviews written, Yelp is a premier review site. Yelp offers local business a free listing on their site with a no-follow link to a website of their choosing.



Great I filled everything out, but what about reviews?

The hardest part about doing a complete local SEO strategy is getting those reviews. On Google, the more reviews you have the higher your ranking is in Google Places. On Yelp positive reviews and higher 'star levels' result in more revenue for your business (Luca, 2012). Then again, negative reviews can result in a loss of revenue. One bad review online can affect your business for years to come but a lot of good reviews can usually outweigh the bad.

Actually getting the reviews is a whole other problem. To get a customer to review your company often means that you have to get them to think about your company outside of doing business with you. Some useful strategies to get them to care about your bottom line and stop thinking about themselves is to deliver exceptional service and remind them frequently of your existence with Facebook updates, emails, coupons, and candy canes. You can also use your local listings pages to encourage reviewing by providing links to your company site that promise positive reviewers future discounts.


Whoa! Submissions and reviews are done, but am I?

Since you are on this site chances are you have realized that SEO isn't ever done. Every day, new information is popping up about how to better optimize your site, blog, and even local listings. Having read and heard nearly everything I can find on local listings, especially Google Places, I would say I know a lot, but it doesn't ever stop. My best local listing advice is, make sure that your business is available on every site, especially ones with mobile capabilities. If you have a store front of any sort, make sure the people walking and driving in your area can find you via mobile or GPS devices. Do research on the most popular applications (apps) and make sure that your business comes up when searched. If you haven't tried it out don't worry, I have.

While writing this article I wanted to prove to myself the importance of mobile devices on local listings. Knowing Foursquare is huge I decided to test them out. I came across not only Foursquare's app, which has some 15 million purchases, but that of 10 other related apps. Most for free, each app claims to help you find 'cool' things and places based on your location. Oh and by the way, Yelp has a free application also. Apps for local business are replacing major search engines. Make sure you can be found on such apps and do not forget to make sure that your website is also mobile capable. The world is going mobile people, don't be the last to know.



Bottom Line (as I give my clients):

Have a local SEO strategy that has consistent information on each local listing site. Don't forget Luca's research and grow your testimonials online - it will help. Finally, go mobile via apps and your website.
