LOCAL DIRECTORY LISTINGS: WHY THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT TO YOUR BUSINESS

LOCAL DIRECTORY LISTINGS: WHY THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT TO YOUR BUSINESS

mobile-search-action-conversions

In today’s local seo landscape, keeping an updated, accurate, and consistent local directory listing for your business is a must. If you are not sure what local directory listings are, then please continue reading. I will share with you what local directory listings are, where you should claim them, and why they are so important to your business’ web presence.

What are local directory listings?

Local directory listings are online informational sources that contain basic information about businesses, such as their business name, phone number, address, hours of operation, photos, and sometimes reviews or ratings. Many local listings, like Google+Local and Bing Local are factored into search results in organic and maps searches.

Is local directory listing a must for your business?

The answer to that questions is an emphatic YES! Your accurate and updated local listing plays an integral role in local seo. Search engines like Google and Bing populates these sites at the top of their organic search results when a user is searching with a local intent. But if you haven’t claimed your local directory listing, then there is a good chance that it has inaccurate or missing information about your business. This signals to search engines that they all belong to your business, which can increase the visibility of your listings (and your website) in the search results.
What’s even more important, many local consumers use search engines like Google and Bing, as well as Yelp directly on their phone, tablet, and PCs to find local businesses in their area. No matter how consumers are finding your listings, you need to make sure they provide the most accurate, compelling information possible to turn those searchers into leads.

Where should you list your business?

The first thing you should do is do a quick search on Google using your business name. Visit each local directory listing to claim and update your business information such as your business name, phone number, address, hours of operation, and photos. Your business should always have accurate, complete listings on key sites like Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and Yelp. But, those aren’t the only sites you should be on; your business should be listed on many general and industry-specific sites across the web.
To determine the top sites for your business, you can conduct a search for your service offerings to see other local directories that Google is displaying in the top 30 search results. Visit each one to claim or add your local business information.
However, this approach can only show you a portion of the local directories you may want your business listing on. And, once your listings are claimed, you’ll need to review and maintain them regularly to ensure they always contain the latest information about your business.

From CES’s Floor: Pixability’s CTO Reports Back on 2015 Tech

To view Original Post go to: http://www.pixability.com/live-from-ces-2015/

CES is not just about electronics anymore. It’s now one of the biggest events of the year for the marketing and ad industries as well. Over 5,000 people from the industry converged on Las Vegas to see the latest trends, set up meetings and go to parties. Industry publication AdWeek released a well-informed article about this trend and also built a whole mini-site about the event.
Hot New Electronics Trends
CES is the primary event where electronics brands release their new gadgets. In case you missed the 2015 CES coverage, I’ll summarize for you:
1) Wearables were everywhere. There were countless activity trackers, health monitors, smart watches, etc. on display.

Screen-Shot-2015-01-16-at-10.36.17-PM10

2) Ever-higher resolution TVs. Just bought a fancy 4K TV? Put it on eBay. The latest generation of TVs has…wait for it… 8K. Some of the screens are also bendable (you can control from your remote if you want a curved or flat screen…) and some come with 3D technology that doesn’t require glasses (but will give you a headache in about 20 seconds, guaranteed).

Screen-Shot-2015-01-16-at-10.37.13-PM3

3) Virtual Reality is back. VR was on display in several locations, mostly demoed on Facebook’s Oculus Rift headset. There is quite a lot of speculation about how marketers will leverage VR.
4) Inexpensive Android phones were everywhere. There are countless Chinese manufacturers who sell these phones, all with almost identical specs. That’s a huge headache for Samsung, Motorola and others who struggle to differentiate their phones.
5) Video equipment is becoming both smaller and larger. There were huge rigs on display, drones of course, but also tiny cameras that are smaller than a GoPro.

Screen-Shot-2015-01-16-at-10.39.19-PM1

6) Hello, 3D Printing! 3D Printing filled half of a full floor in one of the CES exhibition centers. There are countless companies that sell these printers now, but valid use cases will be the true test.

7) And of course… weird, wacky stuff. Standard at CES.

Create a Marketing Plan by Answering These Essential Questions!
by

Writing a small business marketing plan

You've built your small business, developed your products and services and you're ready to make sales: all you're missing, is an audience. Marketing is the stepping stone that lets people know about what you've created and encourages them to buy; for that, you need a marketing plan.
You don't need to be an expert at marketing to create a useful small business marketing plan, you just need to ask the right questions, do some research and create some compelling answers.
Marketing needn't be a 'dark art' and so long as you approach it with an open mind and there are some simple, practical steps you can take right now to put an effective strategy together. This should result in a marketing plan that works, getting you better value for money for your marketing budget and helping you grow your business.
In this article, I’ll share the questions that will help you create a lightweight and effective approach.

It's important to take a closer look at how you define your products, services and audience. Asking these questions will help you identify exactly what you have to offer, who might be interested in buying your products and services and where you might find your audience.
These questions are all about understanding what your small business has to offer your customers, helping you to define your product and service and the unique selling points that make the difference.

What is the specific product or service that you are marketing?

Clearly define in one or two sentences exactly what your business provides, emphasizing your key products and services as a customer might experience them.

What is it about your product or service that is unique or sets it apart?

Explain what is unique about your business offering. Share some detail on your products and services about what makes them desirable and valuable to your customers.

Why would a customer buy your products or services, rather than one of your competitors?

Think about what helps a customer look at your business and understand what sets it apart from your competitors. Explain the value that your business offering provides: you might set yourself apart through providing higher quality services, unique skills, knowledge or experience, better pricing, a different approach, niche solutions, accessibility or greater value for money.

These questions help you to identify and understand your audience. They will help you decide where your potential audience is, who they are and what they want.

Who are the audience and target market that your products and services are targeted at?

Identify the people or businesses that are most likely to be interested in what you have to offer. The more targeted you can make this, the easier this will make things. Remember that it’s much more effective to market to specific niches rather than to the market as a whole.

What does your audience want or need, what is the benefit to them?

Clarify what it is that your target audience specifically requires from your business, product or service. There should be a clearly explainable benefit of what is in it for them as a result of purchasing what you have to offer.

Where does your audience hang out?

Use your experience to think about where your audience are likely to be. There might be popular forums or websites, or perhaps there are magazines or newsletters dedicated to serving the niche your business is serving. Again, the more clearly you can define this, the better as you will be able to target your marketing more effectively.

Next, we’ll examine one of the most important aspects of marketing, the ‘Call to Action’. A call to action is the step that you want a potential customer to take when they interact with your small business. That might be making a purchase, contacting you, submitting information or something else.
Whatever it is, engaging with your audience effectively is critical to winning new business and the quicker and easier you make it, the more success you will have.
These questions are all about engaging with your audience and thecustomer action that you want them to take as a result of seeing your marketing and advertising.

What are the most effective ways / channels to reach your audience?

Based on where your audience hangs out, brainstorm the most likely ways that you might be able to reach them. There are numerous ways including: advertising online or offline (hard copy, media, radio etc.), social media (Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, Google+), advertising on specific websites, forums or newsletters, pay-per-click and display advertising, posting to forums as an expert and many more. Spend some time researching the many and varied channels. It will be well spent.

How will your audience engage with you?

Assuming that people do reach you, think about how you will engage with them. If it is via a website, ensure that the website is setup to handle their visit and guide them to the information they need. If you’re going to speak to them either face-to-face or over the phone, make sure that its easy to reach you. Think about how you can make contacting your business as easy, quick and painless as possible.

What action do you want people to take?

Known as the ‘Call To Action’, this is one of the most vital parts of marketing, defining what you want people to do as a result of them seeing your message and engaging with your business. This might be signing up for a free account, making a purchase from you, getting in touch for further information or something else. This is the next step in the process from converting them from being a potential customer into an actual customer.

What is the next step?

Answering all of these questions will provide a strong basis for a simple and effective marketing plan. Once you know what you are offering, who you are targeting, how you are targeting them and what you want them to do as a result, you’ll be in a much stronger position. You can then use this information to build compelling messages and calls to action that get you customers, build your brand and lead to a successful business.

Local SEO Strategy 2014: For Small To Medium Sized Businesses

Local SEO Strategy 2014: For Small To Medium Sized Businesses

Posted on Monday, 17 March 2014 by  Origianal Post at:  Blog.WooRank
If we always say that change is the only constant in online marketing this is even more important in local SEO. Taking this into account, although we have already discussed extensively on how to optimize your site for local SEO in the past, this post will entail certain local SEO strategies that have been prioritized in 2014.
In 2012, it was reported that 61% of local searches resulted in purchases. In 2013, ever since Google’s Hummingbird update was released, the search engines have become smarter than ever before in returning relevant, personalized and even localized results for searches. Take advantage of being the first one to use the local SEO strategies for 2014 that we highlighted for you:
Local SEO Strategy 2014 For Small To Medium Sized Businesses
Local SEO Strategy 2014 For Small To Medium Sized Businesses

Local SEO Strategies 2014

You might have already optimized for local SEO in the past and the old rules still work, but there are newer strategies that weigh in hugely in 2014:
  • Long Tail And Meaningful Keywords

You may have to rethink your keyword strategy on the website and around every content linked to your  website. With Google’s Hummingbird update in the picture, keywords in the form of questions (e.g. what is the best pizza place in Manhattan) deliver as good and relevant search results as their robot-friendly counterparts (e.g. Pizza Place Manhattan).
Take a look at the following example for Pizza Place Manhattan.
Local Search Result For Pizza Place Manhattan
Local Search Result For Pizza Place Manhattan
And now take a look at Google search result for what is the best pizza place in Manhattan.
Local Search Result For What Is The Best Pizza Place In Manhattan
Local Search Result For What Is The Best Pizza Place In Manhattan
In the traditional search, both these search terms would have given you similar results. But now 90 percent of those results do not bear resemblance to each other. That is because Google search understands the user intent much better. So, if you want to target the second category of search users, you would rather use long tail keywords in your site content as well as every other content linked to your site. But it does not mean that if you use long tail keywords, you will show up in the first page of Google Map results for that keyword. There is a combination of many other factors in play here and they are discussed below.
  • Optimize For Organic SEO

Adam Steele from Lean Marketing and Mike Blumenthals of Blumenthal.com did some recent local pack (set of local search results) case study on Google SERPs. They found that these local results were influenced by individual website’s organic SEO ranking. This means that if you rank well for organic SEO, you will rank better in local search results as well. So, do not give up on your organic SEO efforts in 2014 and keep working with meta title and meta description optimization, heading tag optimization, page speed, image optimization, url optimization, rich snippets, social media optimization, strategic link building, content marketing, conversion optimization, to name a few.
  • Optimized Google Maps And Google Plus Local

Google maps have always been a core local SEO ranking factor with local businesses. The integration of Google maps and business previews from the corresponding Google+ Local have increasingly strong correlation to local SEO.

Thus, if you have an optimized Google Maps and Google Plus Local page, your local SEO strategy of 2014 is headed towards the right direction. Take note of the major local SEO optimization points below with respect to Google Maps and Google Plus Local
    • Accurate NAP – When accurate NAP (name, address and phone number) details are available.
    • Address Match On Website – The NAP details must match with that on your website.
    • Proximity to Google’s City Marker – When your location is closer to a city recognized by Google on the map.
    • Number of Reviews – The higher the number of reviews on Google+ page, the better.
    • Quality of Links – The quality of websites that mention your business, website or NAP details (with a link to your website).
    • Number of Local Citations – Citations from local business listing sites or review sites.
    • Number of Third-Party Reviews  – Number of reviews you receive on sites other than Google+.
  • Pinterest Place Pins

Pinterest announced a new feature in November 2013 that was called Place Pins. This feature would be of a certain interest to local businesses in the food and hospitality industry.
Place Pins Feature For Desktop And SmartPhones On Pinterest
Place Pins Feature For Desktop And Smartphones On Pinterest
Users of Pinterest, can pin new destinations that they already have on their boards or search new places on the map. The map search is powered by FourSquare.
If you have a good fan following for the amazing services you give to your local visitors in a restaurant, resort or hotel, pinners can view your NAP and service details and images of your business related products and services right on the map. Read this article that gives a step-by-step guide to Place Pins, to local businesses.
  • Getting Local Citations

There is no change to this local SEO strategy in 2014, only that it gains in importance. In the post Hummingbird era, local citations from quality directories and other locally relevant sites are still very important to gain higher local SEO ranking on Google search. Check with Get Listed how well you are listed around the web in locally relevant sites. Use this tool to check if you are listed under the right business category with Google Places. We recommend using a Microsoft Excel worksheet  or similar to keep track of all your business listings. You can use this template to save and track your business’s local listing. Keep your listings duly updated with accurate NAP details. We have hand-picked a list of quality business listing sites for major countries. Check whether you are listed in them:
  • Mobile SEO
Forty per cent of mobile searches have local intent. Local SEO is not influenced by mobile SEO (yet), but mobile SEO sure depends on local SEO. This is because not every small, mid-sized and large businesses have optimized for mobile yet. Their website’s rankings on desktop thus cannot be influenced based on their website’s mobile performance. But in the near future there exists a possibility that search engines rank sites with mobile-friendly websites too, on account of the rising numbers in smartphone and tablet users.
On the other hand, when you are on top of your local SEO, you have a higher advantage of ranking high on mobile SEO. In such cases, if a mobile user happens to visit your site, you will be required to give them an awesome mobile experience, otherwise it is just going to affect your local rankings on mobile. Take a look at some statistics that support my point on why mobile SEO is important for local SEO of small to medium businesses:
    • Ninety percent of American adults own a mobile phone out of which 58 percent own smartphones. (Source: PewResearch)
    • Sixty-three percent use the mobile to access websites. (Source: PewResearch)
    • Google’s study on mobile search suggests that 40 percent of mobile searchers are for local services or resources. (Source: Google)
    • Every three out of four mobile searches is a follow-up action that includes tasks such as research, store visit, social media sharing and a phone call. (Source: Econsultancy)
If your small business does not have a mobile-friend site yet, check out our three part series of blogs for that give you a list of responsive web design tools:
Search engines such as Google spare no time in updating their algorithms to improve the quality of local SERPs. This poses a real challenge, especially for the small and mid-sized local businesses, who cannot afford local SEO experts to keep their site up-to-date to these changing trends.
But, it is not all that difficult on your own either. Just know what you are doing and prioritize your local SEO strategies in 2014 accordingly. You will compete alongside bigger brands on local search, sooner enough.

These were the priority-based local strategies of 2014. Let me know how many of these strategies you have adopted already this year?

Increase Local Traffic Podcast Episode #1 - How To Use Flipboard Magazines To Promote Your Business

How To Use Flipboard Magazines To Promote Your Business

Have you heard of Flipboard, but your are not quite sure what it is? Have you wondered how you can use Flipboard to promote your business? Well, keep reading! We are going to show you how to leverage the app named Apple’s iPad App of the Year in 2010 and has only gotten better since.
Flipboard Magazine
Flipboard has been described as many things: A social-network aggregation, magazine-format application software (Mashable), an app that aggregates news and other content and presents it in a personalized magazine-like format (NY Times), and even a really cool app that you can use to make your own magazines (me).

About Flipboard

According to Flipboard, “it is your personal magazine, filled with the things you care about. Catch up on the news, discover amazing things from around the world, or stay connected to the people closest to you–all in one place”.
Flipboard does this by aggregating information from your social feeds, rss feeds, and other partner websites and then presents it to you on your mobile device. The content is delivered in a magazine format that you can literally “flip” with your finger. It has an uncanny ability to make even the most trivial status image look exciting.

Flipboard Magazines

Recently, Flipboard has given its users the ability to create their own magazines. Magazines are awesome because they not only allow you to curate content by topic, they also allow you to share that content in a beautiful magazine format.
Some of the great features of Flipboard Magazines:
  • Magazines can be public or private. Private magazines are a great way to curate content for future marketing efforts, competitor data, etc.
  • You can curate multiple magazines. Here are all of mine: https://flipboard.com/profile/qrkim
  • You can flip content from around the web with the Flipboard bookmarklet, Chrome extension. This means that you are not limited to curating content only form the Flipboard app.
  • You can use the share menu on your mobile device to flip content into your magazines, as long as you have the app installed.
  • You can flip magazines into other magazines. Here is one example: I followed some of the best social media magazines by topic, such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and then flipped them all into my own magazine called the Social Media Marketing Resource Book. Think of it like each magazine is a chapter in a book.
  • You can manage your magazines from the Flipboard app or from the Flipboard editor, a web-based editor.
  • The Flipboard Editor is your magazine dashboard. You can choose the cover image for your magazine, set/edit the magazine title and description, arrange the order of the items you have added and even remove content you no longer want.
  • You can easily share your magazines from the Editor, using Facebook, Twitter and email.
  • You can change the order of your magazine items. By default, Flipboard orders them in reverse-chronological order, but you can rearrange the order. This is really handy if you are using a magazine as a sort of online story book, for instance to chronicle the growth of your business or the progression of a special project.

Mobile Marketing Magic: Making the Most of the Hot New Trend by Penny C. Sansevieri

The term "mobile" tends to confuse a lot of business owners. Questions pop up like "Do I really need it?", "Is my site mobile ready?" and, "What do consumers expect from mobile?" Deciding to go mobile is, for many, no longer an option. With staggering numbers of people accessing content on their mobile phones, mobile is a must. I asked Tania Mulry of DDx Media to spend some time breaking mobile down for us.
Q: Why is mobile marketing so important today?
Admit it. Your mobile phone is a remote control for your life. No other form of media can compare to its power in your life. It is your most personal device, and you almost never share it, unlike TVs, radios, newspapers, magazines and computers. Your mobile phone is always on, always with you and most likely, you even sleep next to it!
According to Wireless Intelligence, there are over 6.4 billion mobile connected devices in the world as of this writing. Considering the world population just crossed 7 billion, that's pretty amazing! A survey conducted by the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA) determined that 92 percent of Americans simply do not leave the house without their cell phones.

BE A WELL-OILED, CONSISTENT, VIDEO CONTENT MACHINE - Video Marketing

BE A WELL-OILED, CONSISTENT, VIDEO CONTENT MACHINE

In the chart below we see a clear
correlation between the number of videos produced and
the total amount of views that these videos
received.
Top brands understand that consistent
and frequent content production leads to increased
views on YouTube videos and channels. This claim
is further supported by analyzing the top performing
quartile of the Top 100 Global Brands against the
bottom quartile. In the chart to the right it is clear
that themost successful channels have 50% more videos
than the least successful channels

Major Report
Findings from
pixability / August: 2013

Successful Practices for YouTube Marketing Success

1. Be a well-oiled, consistent, video content machine
The most successful brands have 50% more videos per channel compared to the
least successful ones.
The best-performing brands publish high volumes of content on a regular schedule.
Top aggregate brands publish approximately 78 videos per month. Leading media
brands produce even more: close to 500 videos per month.

2. Take video optimization and YouTube channel architecture seriously
YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine, so discoverability is key.
YouTube SEO follows very different rules than traditional SEO.
Within traditional SEO—Google prioritizes web pages with YouTube video embeds.
The best performing 25% of Top 100 Global Brands took more care in optimizing
their videos and channels, maintaining twice the number of playlists and video tags
than the bottom 25%.

3. Don’t get caught in the overproduction trap; lesser quality video works well, too
The best YouTube marketers produce a broader range of video content.
Videos do not need to be prime-time quality because those with lower production value
can be just as effective.

4. Apply an “Always On” strategy to video marketing
The most successful brand marketers on YouTube integrate their online video
strategies with their traditional, offline marketing strategies.
Successful video marketers don’t hesitate to produce video series for very limited, but
highly engaged audiences, such as event participants.
17 of the Top 100 Global Brands use less than 50% of their channels.
Continued advertising results in sustainable channel growth and subscribers.

5. Apply branding consistently, intelligently and methodically
The top performers consistently brand their videos in both the video content itself as
well as in metadata, which includes titles, tags, and descriptions.
An appropriate level of branding within videos is essential because successful
YouTube videos are often used outside of the context of a branded YouTube channel,
such as website embedding.
Over-branding may limit sharing within independent communities of interest.

6. Adding more content is more important than adding more channels
37% of all channels have not been updated with fresh content for over 120 days.
Successful marketers have YouTube channels that clearly focus on specific target
audiences.

7. Engage your community with social media
Facebook and Twitter are among the most important sources of traffic on YouTube
within the Top 100 Global Brands.
Users frequently share videos on social networks, and video content is attractive for
sharing.

8.The top 25% of brands had significantly higher social sharing of video than the
bottom 25%.

Viewer sentiment is starting to show distinct trends by industry. Home and luxury
segments have the highest sentiment, while financial services and consumer goods
have the lowest.

How To Keep Your Customers After The Holidays [PART 1]

How To Keep Your Customers After The Holidays [PART 1]

It happens all too often at this time of the year: eCommerce store owners get whipped into a frenzy trying to get everything ready for the holiday season.
A list of questions races through their heads. Are my holiday promotion emails written? Does my drop shipper have everything in stock? Are my ad campaigns (Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Retargeting, etc.) set up and ready for the holidays? Do I have enough customer support?
The list of questions goes on — I know because I am one of those store owners right now.
With all the madness of the holiday season it can be easy to overlook possibly the biggest opportunity that comes with the holiday sales rush: The opportunity to turn your new holiday customers into repeat customers down the road.
Setting your store up for repeat business is one of the easiest ways to increase your bottom line. In the 1-month period shown in the image below, more than half of our visitors to that site (13,601) are returning visitors (people who visited the site at some point before the selected time period).
These returning visitors generated 56% of the revenue for that month. That means that over half of the revenue that month came from people who engaged with us sometime in the month (or months) prior.

So, how are we doing it? And how do you get your customers to come back, engage with you again, and purchase your products month after month?
Here are 2 strategies you can use to increase repeat engagement (HINT: Check the DM Blog for 2 more strategies next week):
#1: Introduce your customers to someone from your brand or company.
A good post-purchase customer retention/branding strategy should start immediately after the purchase.
Add a video on your Thank You page, and below it place a Facebook “like” box for your company. In the video, thank your customer for purchasing, and also encourage them to join your community on Facebook.
We are finding that roughly 50% of people will like a fan page straight from the Thank You page post purchase. And when you get your customers involved in your Facebook community, you’ll have the opportunity to share things of interest with them (we’ll get to that strategy later). Example:

#2: Include a package insert with your shipment.
If you are warehousing & shipping your own products this is a bit easier to pull off. That said, I have yet to run into a drop shipper who wouldn’t include a slip of paper along with all orders going out. Here are the main elements you should include on the insert:
a) Discount coupon for future order, with encouragement to share that coupon with friends.
b) Invitation to join your Facebook community by liking your company’s Facebook page.
c) A heads-up that you will be emailing them with content other than sales promotions (more on this in step 4).
The insert can be a simple piece of paper, a post card, or whatever you want. If you are going the post card route, we’ve found http://www.clubflyers.com to be a good low-priced printing service.
Set up a special coupon code that you only use on the inserts so that you can track the usage.
Takeaway
If you want your store to be around for a while, you must look beyond the point of sale. By creating relationships with your customers you can become a trusted source of information about the products you offer as well as related topics of interest. Broadening the scope of your interaction with your customers increases the significance your brand takes on their lives—and that makes the decision to buy from you instead of some other faceless store an easy one.

Yelp Help and "The Never-ending Story" of Local SEO Strategies A SPN Exclusive Article By Samantha Walt (c) 2012

Yelp Help and "The Never-ending Story" of Local SEO Strategies
A SPN Exclusive Article By Samantha Walt (c) 2012

After assistant professor Michael Luca demonstrated in his Harvard Business School Working Paper the effect Yelp reviews have on restaurant goers, many small business owners nationwide are now trying to employ their own 'Yelp Strategies.' Although Luca states the success a restaurant can have with good reviews, other small businesses do not have the same volume of reviews and thus it's difficult to agree or disagree with his conclusion. Regardless of Luca's concluding remarks, it is undeniable the impact a local SEO strategy can have for a company. With or without reviews, having a comprehensive local strategy can take you from zero to sixty in a day's work. Below, I discuss the ins and outs of dealing with Yelp and other major sites plus a look at the evolution of local listings and mobile apps.

Say what? Yelp?

Even though Yelp has made recent news, many people still have no idea what it is or, why it matters. For a quick background: Yelp, founded in 2004, is a local search engine where anyone can write a review about local services, goods, and businesses. With an average of 66 million new visitors, and 25 million local reviews written, Yelp is a premier review site. Yelp offers local business a free listing on their site with a no-follow link to a website of their choosing.

Great I filled everything out, but what about reviews?

The hardest part about doing a complete local SEO strategy is getting those reviews. On Google, the more reviews you have the higher your ranking is in Google Places. On Yelp positive reviews and higher 'star levels' result in more revenue for your business (Luca, 2012). Then again, negative reviews can result in a loss of revenue. One bad review online can affect your business for years to come but a lot of good reviews can usually outweigh the bad.

Actually getting the reviews is a whole other problem. To get a customer to review your company often means that you have to get them to think about your company outside of doing business with you. Some useful strategies to get them to care about your bottom line and stop thinking about themselves is to deliver exceptional service and remind them frequently of your existence with Facebook updates, emails, coupons, and candy canes. You can also use your local listings pages to encourage reviewing by providing links to your company site that promise positive reviewers future discounts.

Whoa! Submissions and reviews are done, but am I?

Since you are on this site chances are you have realized that SEO isn't ever done. Every day, new information is popping up about how to better optimize your site, blog, and even local listings. Having read and heard nearly everything I can find on local listings, especially Google Places, I would say I know a lot, but it doesn't ever stop. My best local listing advice is, make sure that your business is available on every site, especially ones with mobile capabilities. If you have a store front of any sort, make sure the people walking and driving in your area can find you via mobile or GPS devices. Do research on the most popular applications (apps) and make sure that your business comes up when searched. If you haven't tried it out don't worry, I have.

While writing this article I wanted to prove to myself the importance of mobile devices on local listings. Knowing Foursquare is huge I decided to test them out. I came across not only Foursquare's app, which has some 15 million purchases, but that of 10 other related apps. Most for free, each app claims to help you find 'cool' things and places based on your location. Oh and by the way, Yelp has a free application also. Apps for local business are replacing major search engines. Make sure you can be found on such apps and do not forget to make sure that your website is also mobile capable. The world is going mobile people, don't be the last to know.

Bottom Line (as I give my clients):

Have a local SEO strategy that has consistent information on each local listing site. Don't forget Luca's research and grow your testimonials online - it will help. Finally, go mobile via apps and your website. If you ever doubt the mobile revolution, just talk to my buddy Jed Alpert of Mobile Commons, a leader in the mobile evolution world, and he will tell you. Like I said above, there is always new information sprouting up about local SEO strategies, make sure you know what they are; it's fun!
